Semaglutide & Weight Loss

At Peachtree Women's Care of Northside, we offer medical weight management options including GLP-1 receptor agonists. These medications, which have been used in the treatment of Type II diabetes for over a decade, work by mimicking naturally occurring hormones in the small intestine that regulate insulin and blood sugar.

The Science of Weight Loss

During clinical development, researchers found that GLP-1 medications effectively support weight reduction in addition to blood sugar management. By curbing hunger and slowing gastric emptying, these medications help patients feel full longer and reduce overall caloric intake.

We currently offer several therapeutic options, including:

  • Semaglutide: A highly effective GLP-1 analog widely used for weight management.
  • Tirzepatide: A dual-action GIP and GLP analog. While theoretically more potent, patient response is individual, and it may not be the optimal choice for every person.

Practice Policies & Insurance

It is important for patients to understand the following regarding weight loss medications:

  • Insurance Coverage: These medications are typically not covered by insurance providers when prescribed for weight loss.
  • Branded vs. Compounded: To provide a more affordable alternative to high-cost branded products, our office collaborates with FDA-regulated compounding pharmacies.
  • Prescriptions: We do not provide prior authorizations (PA) for semaglutide or write prescriptions for branded weight loss products.

Expectations & Health Benefits

Clinical studies indicate that patients combining semaglutide with lifestyle modifications achieve significantly greater weight loss than those utilizing lifestyle changes alone. Beyond weight reduction, GLP-1 therapy may provide secondary health benefits, such as improved cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, and a decreased risk of cardiovascular or kidney-related issues.

Usage & Safety Information

These medications are administered via a once-weekly subcutaneous injection. As with any clinical treatment, there are potential side effects and contraindications.
